Society: Farce in Dongtan: Unhinged Woman’s Bogus Sex Crime Accusation Puts Inept Police Chief Under Fire, Petition Goes Viral
One of the central issues fueling the petition is the dubious record held by the female juvenile investigation team of the Hwaseongdongtan Police Department in Gyeonggi Province, which boasted the nation’s top sex crime case-solving rate last year.
This astonishing statistic has raised eyebrows, with many now questioning the legitimacy of their methods. The recent false accusation and the aggressive, threatening investigation tactics employed by the team may very well be the reason behind their seemingly impressive record.
The ineptitude of the Hwaseong-Dongtan Police Department in Gyeonggi Province is under the spotlight after a ludicrous 'sex crime accusation' fiasco, leading to a petition demanding the police chief's dismissal, which has caught significant public attention.
By 12:40 p.m. on the 29th, over 10,000 people had already signed the petition.
Attorney Yoon Yong-jin wasted no time, posting a demand to 'Fire the Dongtan police chief and the head of the female juvenile investigation team' on an online survey platform at 11 p.m. on the 28th.
"The investigators at Dongtan Police Station have caused public outrage by blindly trusting a woman’s absurd claims and prematurely branding a young man in his early 20s as a sexual predator," he pointed out, adding, "Their unprofessional behavior, including speaking in half-truths, is unacceptable."
He continued, "Luckily, the woman who made the false report confessed, and the man was exonerated. However, no one at the Dongtan Police Department is being held accountable for their glaring misconduct."
"This issue transcends a single police department; it highlights a systemic failure in the justice system's handling of sex crime investigations and punishments," he warned. "If this problem is not rectified, every man in South Korea risks being falsely accused of sex crimes."
On the same day, the Hwaseongdongtan Police Department announced that they had decided to drop the case against Mr. A, who had been under investigation for alleged sexual assault, after determining there was no evidence to support the charges.
Mr. A had been accused of peeping at Ms. B, a woman in her 50s, while she was using the women's restroom in the management office building next to the gym in their apartment complex in Hwaseong City at around 5:10 p.m. on the 23rd and engaging in sexual acts. Ms. B called the police at 5:34 p.m. that day.
Two officers from the Women’s Youth Division of Hwaseongdongtan Police Station responded to the scene on the morning of the 24th. After reviewing CCTV footage from the management office building, they confronted Mr. A, asking if he had used the restroom the previous day, and informed him of the report.
Mr. A protested, "I used the restroom, but I never entered the women's restroom," yet the police insisted, "We have CCTV footage." During this exchange, the police’s inappropriate conduct sparked further controversy.
Ms. B abruptly came to the Hwaseongdongtan Police Station on the afternoon of the 27th and confessed to making a false report. "I am on medication prescribed by the hospital, and if I take too much, I sometimes fabricate stories," she admitted.
Ultimately, the police dropped the case against Mr. A and are deliberating whether to charge Ms. B with filing a false report.
