In a move that could shake up South Korea's political landscape, a petition to impeach President Yoon Seok-yeol has catapulted to the National Assembly, where the Judiciary Committee will now consider it.
The National Assembly’s petition site reported on June 25, "The petition titled 'Request for the Immediate Initiation of Impeachment Proceedings against President Yoon Seok-yeol' was handed over to the Judiciary Committee at precisely 2:51 p.m. on June 23, having garnered the necessary 50,000 signatures."
Barely a week old, the petition, launched on the June 20th, didn't just meet but obliterated the threshold, amassing 50,000 signatures by the 25th. South Korea’s National Assembly expedites petitions with over 50,000 signatures to the Judiciary Committee within 30 days. As of 4 p.m. on the 26th, the number had surged to an eye-popping 200,528.
The petitioner, Kwon Mo, didn’t mince words, condemning Yoon’s presidency as a wrecking ball for South Korea’s economy, security, foreign policy, public welfare, and democracy.
Kwon detailed five damning accusations:
- Alleged meddling in the martyrdom of Marine Chae.
- Accusations of accepting high-priced handbags from Kim Gun-hee.
- Stirring up a war crisis on the Korean Peninsula.
- Advocating a pro-Japanese stance on the issue of forced labor victims.
- Facilitating the ocean dumping of Fukushima’s contaminated water.
The Judiciary Committee, now tasked with deciding whether to push the petition to a full parliamentary vote, will see the final impeachment fate sealed by the Constitutional Court. The committee, led by Democratic Party’s Chung Cheong-rae, comprises 18 members: 10 from the Democratic Party, seven from the People’s Power, and one independent.
Committee member Lee Sung-yoon couldn’t resist a cheeky dig on Facebook, posting the petition link with the caption, "Welcome. We're waiting for you."
